Tree Survey

Progress with the new community school woodland is moving forwards rapidly, and it’s really exciting to see. A tree survey was carried out in January, which identified existing species and highlighted ones that would need felling or pollarding for safety reasons.

There was much looking up at the heavens, perhaps in the hope that the rain would stop, but mostly to try and ID the species that were growing on site. There are lots of Ash, which sadly may inevitably succumb to Ash Die Back, but also a lovely grand Oak, which sits proudly at the top of the site. It is a lovely nod to Oakridge School, the founder of this amazing initiative.

A list of jobs that will need doing prior to planting was drawn up and a possible seating area was also identified.

The tree survey was led by a team of local ecologists on a very wet and windy day. It didn’t dampen spirits though. It was great to see the project moving forwards.

Below are some comparison shots of the site. The images on the left were taken in November 2019 and the images on the right were taken in January 2020. They show the work that has gone into removing the brambles that covered much of the land. It's fantastic to see so much progress, all of which has been kindly undertaken by the landowner at no cost to any of the schools involved. It truly is a great team effort and highlights just how much the project is grounded in the very good nature of people. It’s a true success story about a community coming together to help each other create something that all will benefit from.
